About Alan

Born in Melbourne, Alan realised his passion for cooking at the age of 12, when he created his first special occasion meal for his parents wedding anniversary. After completing high school, Alan studied at William Angliss Institute and undertook an apprenticeship at The Victoria Hotel in Little Collins St. Melbourne, under the tutorage of Ian Wheeler and Jean Marc Lemoine.

In 1997, Alan and his fiancé Lisa commenced traveling throughout Europe where they were influenced by diverse international cuisines. They settled in Canada where Alan accepted a post at Whistler, working as Chef Garde Manger at the prestigious boutique hotel Chateau Whistler Resort. The experience and knowledge he gained from this role refined his cooking skills and fueled his passion for exceptional quality cuisine.

Upon his return to Australia, Alan worked at Chateau Yering in the Yarra Valley for a number of years, under Chef Gary Cooper. Enjoying the regional lifestyle, he then went on to work at The Healesville Hotel and ran the kitchen for special events at Pizzini Wines for over a decade.

Alan's passion for local producers and rare breeds saw him named the Patron Chef of the Rare Breeds Trust of Australia from 2004 -2007. He subsequently traveled to Italy as part of the Australian contingency for Terra Madre 2006, Italy's own slow food convention, where yet more inspiration and knowledge was gained.

In 2014 Alan and Lisa opened their restaurant and local produce store Grant St Grocer in the regional Victorian township of Alexandra. With a passion for supporting local producers and showcasing the best the region has to offer, Alan's seasonal menus are locally focused and each skillfully prepared dish is layered with flavour.

The produce store also works to support local producers, offering artisan products for tasting and purchase, including a delicious range of local honeycomb, jam, chocolate, coffee, sweets, oils, beers, wines and ciders.

Alan has kindly shared with us his recipe for Szechuan Duck Gua Bao with Flowerdale Farm Pickled Veg and Sesame Caramel. Enjoy this dish at Grant St Grocer Alexandra, or view the recipe on the Flowerdale Farm website
