Matt Stone



Passionate advocates of sustainability and ethical food sourcing, co-head chefs Matt Stone and Jo Barrett have had a profound impact on the restaurant at Oakridge Wines.  Introducing what they call "Yarra Valley Cuisine"; a zero-waste menu philosophy, with all ingredients either grown in the Oakridge kitchen garden, foraged from around the region or sourced from local farms and producers.

About Matt Stone

Born in West Australia Matt commenced his apprenticeship in 2003 at Leeuwin Estate and after moving to Perth, he was appointed Sous Chef at the famed Perth restaurant, Star Anise, at the age of 20.

At just 22, Matt was approached by designer and Greenhouse Perth owner Joost Bakker to join his team as Head Chef.  At Greenhouse Perth Matt embraced Joost’s sustainable philosophies and ethical food concepts, putting Greenhouse at the front of Perth’s dining culture.

Following from the success of that restaurant he continued to work closely with Joost in setting up Australia’s first no waste café, Silo (then known as Brothl) as well as heading up the kitchens at Joost’s Greenhouse popup restaurants on Sydney Harbour and Melbourne’s Southbank, in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

In July 2015, Matt was offered the position of Executive Chef of Oakridge Estate in the Yarra Valley, Victoria.  In his short time there, Matt has successfully set up “close to 500 square metres of vegetable gardens across the property, and we’re composting all of our green waste”.  Matt also religiously uses local and ethically farmed and foraged produce.  

Working closely with his partner and co-Head Chef Jo Barrett at Oakridge Estate, the pair have firmly put the restaurant at the forefront of the Australian dining scene picking up numerous top awards in 2016 including: Delicious Magazine 2016 Outstanding Chef, The Australian’s Hot 50 Restaurants and awarded Best Regional Restaurant for 2016.

Out of the kitchen Matt has had guest appearances on several television shows including Masterchef and in 2016 Matt released his first cook book, The Natural Cook.
