Flavours of Winter: Microgreens

Microgreen red cabbageAs Flowerdale Farm's microgreens are greenhouse grown, production of all lines continues throughout the year, however some varieties love the cooler weather. Chard, Red and Green Radish, Continental and Curly Parsley, Mache, Rocket, Red Cabbage and the Mustard lines will all be looking great over the following months. During winter we recommend that Chefs try to move away from the Basil lines as these varieties really don't appreciate the cold and tend to be lower quality as a result.
The growth of Micro Salads tends to slow over the cooler months, so as a substitute we recommend Chefs try our Mixed Microgreen Boxes and combine these to make your own unique blends of colours and flavours.

Flavours of Winter: Foliette

Bulls Blood FolietteThe season for Bulls Blood Foliette has commenced and will be in great supply over the cooler months. With a brilliant earthly flavour, it is perfect for autumn dishes. We recommend using Bulls Blood Foliette as a substitute for Red Garnet Foliette over winter, as this is a summer line and its season is finishing. Oyster Leaves will also be in slightly reduced supply over winter.
Red Vein Sorrel (Blood Sorrel), Red Elk, Lemon Balm and Purple Shiso Foliette will all be in great condition and supply throughout winter. Green Elk Foliette season is just starting so we expect to have this line back in stock towards the end of autumn.

Flavours of Winter: Petite & Baby Veg

baby coloured carrotsFlowerdale Farm's petite and baby vegetable collections will have good supply over the following months. Harvested during the early vegetative stage, they have a highly concentrated flavour with a crisp and delicate texture. Baby Purple, Yellow, White and Orange Carrots will be in plentiful supply and are the perfect side for winter dishes.

Baby Coloured Cauliflowers also shine during winter. Produced from traditional selective breeding of heirloom varieties, baby Coloured Caulies retain their brilliant colour even after cooking and are higher in antioxidants than regular white cauliflower.

Flavours of Winter: Australian Natives

samphireFlowerdale Farm will continue to have consistent supply of our Australian Native lines over winter. Best buys will be Karkalla, Samphire, Seaspray, Saltbush, Warrigal Greens and Iceplant. We currently have superb quality on fresh Finger Limes. The fresh Finger Lime season will draw to a close as the weather cools, but we will have frozen stock available throughout the winter months.

During the cooler weather our Australian Native Herbs will be available on pre-order only, as will Geraldton Wax.

Flavours of Winter: Salads

mache rosettesMache Rosettes love the cooler conditions, so expect great nutty flavour and solid supply over the coming months. Watercress is another winter winner with its signature spicy, peppery taste making it ideal for Asian, French and traditional English cuisine.

Flowerdale Farm brand Premium Hand Cut Salads will also be in excellent supply over winter and are the perfect way to add freshness to hearty winter dishes.
